Neither could say it out loud, so they said it by staying close.

A true story ยท Tuffie & Paul- Part 2

|
You remembered the name. We asked you to, and you did. So here is a little more of it. Before Tuffie, there was the war.
Paul went to Vietnam as a young man and came home the way a lot of them did. Quieter than he left. Carrying things he never set down. For years he managed. Then the war came back for him, late and without warning, in the shape of a diagnosis nobody wants. Post-traumatic stress. A wound you cannot see, and cannot reach with words.
The nights were the worst of it. Terrors that pitched him half out of bed before he was even awake. The kind of thing that teaches a person to dread the dark. And then there was this dog. Seventeen pounds. No training. Pulled off the side of a highway a few months earlier, hurt and scared and out of luck. Somehow Tuffie understood Paul in a way no person ever had.

He learned the terrors before they came. We still do not know how. He was never wrong.

We tell Tuffie's story for a reason. It is called the Tuffie Fund, and it exists for families who cannot afford cancer care for the animals who hold them together. More on that soon.
